7 Reasons Why I Started a Blog in 2019

So I spent a few hours going through the trouble of setting up this blog (learn how I did it here). Before that, I spent days thinking about what I'm going to write about, who I'm writing for and, of course, why I wanted to start a blog. After telling half my friends that I wanted to start blogging, (and failing to convince them to start one too), I decided to bite the bullet and start writing. Minus the first 2 reasons, these aren't really in any particular order.

1. Documentation. The biggest reason I want to start blogging is so that I can centralize artifacts of various mediums for my random shenanigans. Why? So I can show my mother of course.

2. I want to do Everything. I have a problem. I'm pretty sure today alone I've thought about being a race car driver 20 times. For some reason, I really want to open up a peanut butter factory. Within the last year, I've taken Japanese classes, pottery classes, woodworking classes, and soon I want to learn how to produce music. This week, I decided I wanted to write a blog so here I am.

3. Reader soulmates. Maybe you're just here because I've shamelessly promoted my blog. Actually, I don't see how else you'd end up here. Anyway, I'd like to think that in the same way all these people out there are looking for their romantic soulmates, there's a reader out there looking for my posts. At the end of the day, if something I post helps someone out there in any way, I'd call it a success.

4. Giving back to the Interwebs. So much of what I know today is from the internet. Countless random Stack Overflow posts and thousands of Google searches have led me to where I am today. With the exception of the data that Google and Facebook gather from my internet activity, I've pretty much been an internet lurker for my entire life and haven't contributed anything to the internet. As a result of some arbitrary self-imposed moral guidelines, I think it's time to give back to the internet community however I can.

5. Learning. I look forward to this blogging thing as a way for me to learn new things. Even before my first post, I have already learned things like how to set up a blog, master clickbait titles, and whether or not blog posts are supposed to be capitalized. More importantly, I want to learn how to write. I have always been afraid of writing. An hour with a therapist would probably unravel more about that than I would like to know. Regardless of whatever the reasons might be, I think writing, like most things, is a learnable skill and hopefully through this blog, I can learn how to write better.

6. Establishing an Opinion. Essentially, I want to be able to formulate my thoughts and write them down. Far too often, my opinions and responses are vague and diplomatic. I rarely take sides because I worry that I may be wrong or that someone will judge me. Most of the time, I worry that I am unable to properly express and summarize all the thoughts in my mind. This ties closely with reason number 5, but I hope that blogging will help me learn to think better.

7. Enable others. Originally, I didn't really have a 7th reason. I didn't even have a reason 3 - 6. I found myself stuck on thinking about the perfect 7th reason for about a week now. Rather than making any progress, I just found myself delaying and pushing off this post for a week. So through that, I guess I did find a good reason; I want to encourage people to just do it.  If you're here looking for reasons to start your own blog or start anything, just do it.  If there's anything you'll learn through this blog, it's that I'm way under qualified for all the random things I do, but I do it anyway and no one really cares.
